Jakob Battick is an experimental singer/songwriter and visual artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was born in 1989 in Bangor, ME and grew up just a few blocks from Stephen King’s spidery mansion. He spent his formative years helming a series of idiosyncratic & rapidly evolving musical projects, from the spastic teenage noise-rock of 1800s Sea Monster to the hypnotic, bass-heavy, drone-obsessed minimalism of electronic outfit Afraid.

In 2015 Jakob & his longtime collaborator Ryan Cutler relocated to the West Coast, where they began experimenting with their own brand of subversive, slow motion Cosmic American music under the Afraid name. Slowly but surely, the project took on a more personal nature & resulted in the 2018 full-length album “To Be Born Again & Again”, released under Jakob’s own name on the Maine-based printing press & record label Wilt Press. In October of that year Jakob embarked on a three & a half week solo tour of the US in support of the album.

To date, Jakob has put out releases on the Maine-based labels Pretty Purgatory & Wilt Press, as well as the West Virginia based Crash Symbols. Live, he has provided support for The Body, Xiu Xiu, Amen Dunes, JD Samson, Father Murphy, Falls of Rauros, Gem Club, and Herbcraft through his various projects, as well as collaborating with Jarboe (Swans) on a digital-only single in 2012.
